festive fart

looks like this blog is going to be quiet-er than usual...
everyone has gone off for their festive holidays. except for the handful of dongkois who have to stay back and work so hard day after day without knowing when to take a break.

well, what to do? someone has to do the job while u guys go home and have fun!
so, when u all return, please remember the poor souls slaving away in the labs/fish house...please be generous with the kuih (or duit)raya.

as for me and the rest, here's a
HAPPY DEEPAVALI (to Vani!) & SELAMAT HARI RAYA to the rest of the jokers...

(do u hear the wind whistling in the background...? that's how quiet this place has become..)

Take Five

After five episodes of Lost and Desperate Housewives (Season 2), they will be taking a breather for maybe up to three weeks, while they screen reruns. Will that be enough time for you all to play catch-up? ;)

Happy Birthday to MoZF!!!

Coming to a KFC outlet near you?

Caught my attention while reading the papers this morning. Found a similar article online. Was wondering if someone *ahem* will be staging a similar protest *wink*wink* at the Sungai Dua outlet soon. ;)

Kuah Rojak Chronicles

Penang: Latest update. The unknown man(pic) was known to eat only the kuah (sauce) rojak, even after the fruits have mysteriously disappeared. Eye witnesses claim that he is known to be very protective over the last bit of the rojak kuah. If u happen to see this man, please stay away and call the authorities (fruit cops??). He may be dangerous if disturbed. may bite or snap if bothered.

This is a community service reminder. Stay safe. Act now, before it's too late.
Pls sign up for our sms info update, send your details to 4053.

Feeding Frenzy

I'm sitting next to two girls who are crazily playing the offline game Feeding Frenzy at the moment. It's a game about fishies eating other fishies eating other fishies, so on and so forth. (I'm not sure if they are competing against each other or not but I don't dare to disturb their rhythm, in fear they will eat me up like those little fishies in the game... :P) A game very befitting for graduate students researching about fishies, no? Can't really blame them since the internet connection here at USM is now very sporadic. @#$#%$#^$%#^ Fortunately I can login to my gmail to write this blog entry. ;)

I am saying that it is wrong but it is a bit of a laugh!! Please
follow the simple instructions . 1- Go to www.google.com 2- Type in
"Failure", without the quotes 3- Instead of hitting "Search" hit "I'm

people at Google fix it..."

trash talk

did u smell that? *ewww*

just curious, anyone knows when are we going to get a proper garbage disposable area/system at the fish house? i think that mound of garbage is getting pretty gross...

Thief! Thief!

Someone took something from my lab without our knowledge or permission today. Hmmmm, I wonder who.... ;)

key to my heart

the guy who duplicates keys likes to give people double work!!!

i remember the last time chepah duplicated some keys with him, they couldn't work. today, i went to duplicate the key to the sliding door (the key which someone broke, and i heard that no one wants to take credit for..)...and the key won't work too...

can someone follow me to scold the apek tomorrow? he needs to go back to key-making school...

Whopee...I've Got My Car Back!

Yeh! Finally I get to use back my SLK. ;) It's a relief actually especially after what happened... :P

tiger tails

yesterday's news paper headlines made me really upset!
they found a tiger butchered into 4 pieces and stuffed into a fridge. You can read the whole article by clicking here.

i know it is in some people's culture to eat or use parts of wild animals...but i still feel really sad that they are being so selfish. i've read somewhere that they claim that some wild animal parts eaten can act as an aphrodisiac...how selfish is that? the endangered animal was hunted down and killed so that they can have a moment of pleasure?? no way! i thought there are plants like 'tongkat ali' which claims to have aphrodisiac properties too. why don't they go munch on them roots?

sorry for the outburst, but this issue really bothers me. do we really need snake skin wallets? or turtle shell jewellery? or gator boots? tiger skin deco? elephant tusks? i just hope that the future generations will realize that the wild life should be protected...and not end up in soup bowls.

LAB is such a HAPPY place...

it's sunday and i'm in lab...had to mark mountains of undergrads limnology reports.....nobody else's here and am blasting the speaker...sigh....it reminds me of what my boss once said,"post-grad don't have life outside lab"....though i got life outside there with lots and lots of fun things to do...but still,i cannot leave this lab today.....sigh.......ain't my life happy?

hi everyone ,
this is my first post, enjoyed reading others, far far away frm my country , when i came here never thought i will get such good friends .but wow cheers for us, frm this blogger hope i get more n more of them and more of there unique or should i say wiered thoughts on most of the things. so welcome to the jungle, no rules guys just say it..................

wrong number, babe

have u ever sent out something by mistake? apparently one of the emails that i've received wasn't meant for me...that MoZF accidentally forwarded a wrong email to some of us...we had a good laugh about it because the contents weren't exactly the 'cleanest' things in town, if u know what i mean...

but anyways, i think i have gotten in a few messes due to 'mistakes' like this. wrong emails, wrong IMs, wrong sms, wrong phone calls...yikes! i think i even made a blunder yesterday. i wanted to call someone. but i ended up calling the person whom i last saw.i think i did that quite a few times...it's like after talking to someone, u want to make a call, but end up calling the person standing right in front of u...

but the classic one was my friend once sent an sms filled with 'beautiful' language to his boss by accident.haha..his boss forwarded it back to him to tell him that he had sent that sms to her. but he survived.

some people can be so blur sometimes, self included :p

Previously on Lost....

Yawn...it's just so boring when you have to wait a whole week for the next episode to be screened. I guess I shouldn't complain since there are some poor souls out there that probably have to wait for it to be screened on 8TV or Astro sometime next year! Now, now....don't be envious... ;)

P/S Season 2 is just great....it's getting better with every episode! :D

hmm....i am speechless lah....1st time mah....dunnno what to write....but is great lah....finally we have a place to mengadu when the fishies and our bossy buly us....a chance for us to know each other better.....

guess who finally jump on this bandwagon?hehe...
hey kshern...who's who on the blog?i can guess some ppl from my lab but not sure about the others...ya lah.....in case i "terkutuk" ke....or should we juz keep ourselves anonymous??not bad idea olso.... (^_^)

Interesting...

very interesting blog... at least people who washes tanks everyday are not forgotten...

for the first time...

there's always a saying that, the first time is the most memorable...
well, i had one of those 'first times' today. before your mind starts to wonder, let me set the record straight.

i have been working with fish for 3 years now. and as the normality goes, we have to kill the creatures we feed and care and loved in the end of the experiment. i usually use the freezing method to do so...i found it to be the least cruel and less taxing on my conscience.but i know that most people just chop off the head and carry on dissecting the fish as though nothing happened.

so, today i decided to walk on the dark side. i had to take some tissues for analysis, so the first fish went in the freezer. and i dissected it as usual. then i don't know why, but i felt that i should try it the way everyone else does...so, *snip* went the first head. freaky! the body still moved in my hand...i felt so sorry for the fella. even though i finally found it inside of me to do that, i think it's really scary. my heart still skips a beat when the headless body wiggles between my fingers...poor fishies! :(

but, the other thing i was thinking about is that how things become 'normal' and 'ok' once u do it many many times...it's weird.

oh, and i didn't enjoy my 'first time' at all...killing fish when they are still alive, that is.. :(

Work In Progress

Please bear with us while we get things started here. It's still a work in progress. Guys, please do give some pointers on how to improve the layout of this place. I'm planning to put some extra services here but I'm keeping mum for now. Anyway, for those who are wondering how we came about with the title and the URL, well let's just say it wasn't exactly as simple as it sounds. We tried various permutations for the URL but all seems to have been taken! Even 'ikanbilis' was taken, can you believe it?!? Fortunately, we found something that was catchy, easy to remember and wasn't taken! Whoopee!!! As for the title, it just came naturally when we decided on using 'hanyir' as our address. For those who does not know what the word 'hanyir' means, it's a Malay word to express the pungent smell of fish. So, do participate and try to make this place....FUN! ;)

the crypt keeper codes

something new to do, other than washing tanks and feeding fish....yeah!
just wondering, mr. kshern, any rules and regulations that come along with this blog?

Welcome To Our Fishy Domain!

Welcome to the launching of our blog! So what's this blog about? What we have here are ramblings of graduate students involved in the research of fishes in Universiti Sains Malaysia (Science University of Malaysia), a public university in Penang, Malaysia.

Dealing with live animals can be very fun and such a pain-in-the-ass at the same time, so imagine the potentially colourful things we could post here. So, enjoy the things we post up here of our day at the lab or the fish house and hopefully you would find reading this blog entertaining and relaxing.
